A common question that I get asked is: Are silk pillowcases good for curly hair? The simple answer: probably. This might not be the answer that you were expecting! Come along with me as I briefly explain what I mean.
First, why are silk pillowcases good for curly hair?
There is no other natural fabric on the planet that matches real, pure silk for slip, slide and glide. Hair just glides across a silk surface. The fabric doesn’t grab, tug or pull on it at all. This means less frizz and way better shape for curly hair. When curls have better definition naturally, they shine more. So, less bedhead, less frizz, better shape, more shine. Real, pure silk is a total all-around win for curls.
So, to recap: Are silk pillowcases good for curly hair? You bet.
Then why would I say probably?
Because not all silk pillowcases are created equal. There’s nothing like the feel of real, pure silk against your face. There’s nothing else on the planet as good for your curls as real, pure silk. Many self-described silk pillowcases contain some cotton or polyester. Although cotton is natural, it isn’t curl friendly. It’s got a texture to it that grabs, pulls, and tugs on hair. It tugs curls out of shape. On the other hand, polyester is manmade. It’s basically a chemical cocktail that can be turned into satin. While satin feels smooth, it is not natural. It doesn’t breathe at all. Therefore, it can sleep hot. And where there’s heat, there’s static.
So, when you ask me, “Are silk pillowcases good for curly hair?” my answer is yes! As long as they are the real deal and 100% pure silk.
